Ingredients

1 lb ground beef (or substitute with turkey for a lighter option)

1 medium onion, diced

2 cloves garlic, minced

1 can (15 oz) kidney beans, drained and rinsed

1 can (15 oz) black beans, drained and rinsed

1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes (with juices)

1 cup fig jam (preferably homemade or all-natural for best flavor)

1 tablespoon chili powder

1 teaspoon ground cumin

1 teaspoon smoked paprika

1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (adjust based on your spice preference)

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1 cup beef or vegetable broth

1 tablespoon olive oil

1/4 cup fresh cilantro, chopped (for garnishing)

Sour cream or Greek yogurt (for serving)

Instructions

Brown the Meat: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Once the oil is shimmering, add the ground beef or turkey. Cook for approximately 5-7 minutes, breaking the meat apart with a spatula, until fully browned. If there’s excess fat, drain it off before proceeding.

Sauté the Aromatics: Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet with the browned meat. Continue sautéing for another 3-4 minutes, stirring often, until the onion becomes translucent and releases a fragrant aroma.

Combine the Ingredients: Transfer the beef and onion mixture into your slow cooker. To this, add the drained kidney beans, drained black beans, diced tomatoes with their juices, fig jam, chili powder, cumin, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper, salt, black pepper, and broth. Stir everything together well to ensure all ingredients are evenly mixed.

Cook the Chili: Cover the slow cooker with its lid and set it to low heat. Allow the chili to cook for 6-8 hours, or if short on time, set it to high for 3-4 hours. The longer cooking time will help blend all the flavors beautifully.

Adjust Seasonings: After the cooking time has passed, carefully taste the chili. Adjust seasonings, adding more salt, pepper, or spices as needed. If you prefer a thicker consistency, leave the lid off for the last 30 minutes of cooking to let some of the liquid evaporate.

Serve and Garnish: Ladle the delicious fig jam chili into serving bowls. Top each bowl with a generous dollop of sour cream or Greek yogurt, and finish with a sprinkle of fresh cilantro for an extra burst of flavor and a pop of color.

                - Presentation Tips: Serve the chili with warm, crusty bread or over a bed of rice. Consider garnishing with extra cilantro and sliced jalapeños for an enticing presentation!
