Ingredients

1 lb beef steak (ribeye or sirloin, thinly sliced)

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 medium onion, thinly sliced

1 medium green bell pepper, thinly sliced

1 cup mushrooms, sliced (optional)

Salt and pepper to taste

4 hoagie rolls

4 slices provolone cheese (or Cheez Whiz for a traditional twist)

1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce

Optional toppings: hot peppers, mayonnaise

Instructions

Prepare the Beef: If your beef steak is not pre-sliced, place it in the freezer for about 1 hour until slightly firm. This will make it easier to slice thinly against the grain. Once sliced, set the beef aside.

Cook the Vegetables: In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and sauté for about 3 minutes or until they begin to soften. Next, incorporate the green bell peppers and the optional mushrooms; continue to sauté for an additional 5-7 minutes until all veggies are tender. Season with salt and pepper to taste, then remove them from the skillet and set aside.

Cook the Steak: In the same skillet, increase the heat to medium-high. Add the previously sliced steak to the pan, season it with salt and pepper, and drizzle in the Worcestershire sauce. Cook for approximately 4-5 minutes, stirring occasionally until the steak is nicely browned and cooked to your preference.

Combine Ingredients: Add the sautéed vegetables back into the skillet with the steak. Gently mix all components together and warm for an extra minute to ensure everything is heated through and well combined.

Melt the Cheese: Split the hoagie rolls lengthwise and place them cut side up on a baking sheet. Distribute an equal portion of the steak and vegetable mixture onto each roll. Top with a slice of provolone cheese (or a generous amount of Cheez Whiz). Broil in the oven for 2-3 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

Serve: Once out of the oven, feel free to add any optional toppings such as hot peppers or a dollop of mayonnaise. Serve the cheese steaks immediately while they are hot and cheesy.
