Ingredients

14 oz (400g) firm tofu, pressed and drained

1 cup all-purpose flour (or gluten-free flour for a gluten-free option)

1 cup panko breadcrumbs

1/2 cup nutritional yeast

1 teaspoon garlic powder

1 teaspoon onion powder

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried thyme

1 teaspoon paprika

Salt and pepper, to taste

1/2 cup unsweetened plant milk (such as almond or soy)

2 tablespoons soy sauce

2 cloves garlic, minced

Oil for frying (coconut oil or avocado oil works best)

Instructions

Prepare the Tofu:

Begin by cutting the pressed tofu into bite-sized cubes or triangular pieces according to your preference for dipping and serving.

      Mix the Wet Batter:

In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together the plant milk, soy sauce, and minced garlic until well combined and set aside.

          Prepare the Dry Coating:

In a separate bowl, combine the flour, nutritional yeast, garlic powder, onion powder, oregano, thyme, paprika, salt, and pepper. Mix well to ensure the seasoning is evenly distributed throughout the flour.

              Panko Mixture:

In another bowl, pour in the panko breadcrumbs. To enhance the flavors, consider mixing in a pinch of garlic powder or a sprinkle of herbs into the breadcrumbs.

                  Coating the Tofu:

For each piece of tofu, first dip it into the wet batter, allowing any excess batter to drip off, then dredge it in the flour mixture until completely coated. Finally, roll it in the panko breadcrumbs, pressing gently to ensure the crumbs adhere well.

                      Heat the Oil:

In a large skillet, heat about 1/4 inch of oil over medium heat. To test if the oil is hot enough for frying, drop a few panko breadcrumbs into the oil; they should sizzle immediately.

                          Fry the Nuggets:

Carefully add the coated tofu nuggets in batches to the hot oil, making sure not to overcrowd the skillet. Fry each side for approximately 3-4 minutes or until the nuggets are golden brown and crispy.

                              Drain Excess Oil:

Once the nuggets are ready and crispy, use a slotted spoon to transfer them onto a paper towel-lined plate to absorb extra oil. Optionally, sprinkle them with a bit more salt for added flavor.

                                  Serve:

Enjoy your Crispy Garlic Herb Tofu Nuggets warm, served with your favorite dipping sauce, such as sweet chili sauce or rich garlic aioli.
