Creamy Tomato Basil Pasta Bake

12 oz (340g) penne pasta

2 tablespoons olive oil

1 medium onion, finely chopped

4 cloves garlic, minced

1 can (28 oz) crushed tomatoes

1 teaspoon dried oregano

1 teaspoon dried basil

1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional, for a kick)

Salt and pepper, to taste

1 cup heavy cream

1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese

1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese

Fresh basil leaves, for garnish

Instructions
 

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) to prepare for baking.

    Cook the pasta: In a large pot, bring salted water to a rolling boil. Add the penne pasta and cook according to package instructions until al dente, typically about 8-10 minutes. Drain the pasta and set it aside.

      Sauté the aromatics: In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion, sautéing for about 5 minutes until it becomes soft and translucent. Next, stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until aromatic.

        Prepare the sauce: Pour in the crushed tomatoes along with the dried oregano, dried basil, red pepper flakes (if using), and season with salt and pepper. Allow the sauce to simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally to meld the flavors.

          Combine pasta and sauce: Reduce the heat to low. Pour in the heavy cream, stirring until completely mixed. Add the cooked penne pasta to the skillet, making sure each piece is thoroughly coated with the sauce.
