Ingredients

2 large sweet potatoes (approximately 2 pounds)

1/4 cup unsalted butter, softened to room temperature

1/2 cup heavy cream (substitute with milk for a lighter alternative)

2 tablespoons pure maple syrup (or honey for a different flavor)

1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional for extra warmth)

Salt and freshly cracked black pepper, to taste

Chopped fresh chives or parsley for garnish (optional)

Instructions

Prepare the Sweet Potatoes: Begin by peeling the sweet potatoes and cutting them into evenly sized chunks, approximately 1-inch thick. This ensures uniform cooking throughout.

Boil the Sweet Potatoes: Place the sweet potato chunks into a large pot and cover them with cold water. Add a pinch of salt to season the water. Bring the pot to a vigorous boil over medium-high heat and cook for about 15-20 minutes or until the sweet potatoes are tender enough to be easily pierced with a fork.

Drain and Steam: Once the sweet potatoes are fully cooked, drain them well in a colander. Return the drained sweet potatoes to the pot and leave them covered off the heat for 3-5 minutes. This allows any residual steam to evaporate, ensuring your mash is not watery.

Mash the Sweet Potatoes: Using a potato masher or an electric hand mixer, mash the sweet potatoes until they reach a smooth and creamy consistency.

Add Creaminess: To the mashed sweet potatoes, add the softened butter, heavy cream (or milk), maple syrup, vanilla extract, ground cinnamon, and nutmeg (if using). Stir thoroughly until all ingredients are well combined and creamy.

Season to Taste: Taste the mash and season with salt and freshly cracked black pepper to your liking. If you desire a sweeter mash, feel free to add additional maple syrup or vanilla extract to enhance the flavor balance.

Serve: Transfer the creamy sweet potato mash to a serving bowl. If desired, sprinkle the top with chopped fresh chives or parsley for a pop of color and flavor. Serve warm and enjoy this delightful side dish!
