Ingredients

For the Bread:

2 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/4 cup packed brown sugar

1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened at room temperature

2 large eggs

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1/2 cup buttermilk

1 large apple (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled, cored, and diced

For the Cinnamon Swirl:

1/4 cup packed brown sugar

1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

1 tablespoon all-purpose flour

2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

For the Glaze (optional):

1 cup powdered sugar

1-2 tablespoons milk or heavy cream

1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

Preheat the Oven: Begin by preheating your oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare a 9x5 inch loaf pan by greasing it lightly. Set it aside for later.

Prepare the Cinnamon Swirl: In a small bowl, combine the 1/4 cup of packed brown sugar with the 1 tablespoon of ground cinnamon and 1 tablespoon of flour. Drizzle in the melted butter and mix well until everything is thoroughly combined into a thick paste. Set aside for assembly.

Mix Dry Ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and 1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon until evenly blended.

Cream Butter and Sugars: In another bowl, beat together the softened butter, granulated sugar, and packed brown sugar until the mixture is light and fluffy, approximately 3-4 minutes.

Add Eggs and Vanilla: Incorporate the eggs one at a time into the butter-sugar mixture, ensuring to mix well after each addition. Finally, stir in the vanilla extract for added flavor.

Combine Dry and Wet Ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredient mixture to the wet mixture, alternating with the buttermilk. Start the process with the dry ingredients and finish with them to maintain a good balance, mixing until just combined; avoid over-mixing.

Fold in Apples: Carefully fold the diced apple into the batter. Ensure the apple pieces are evenly distributed throughout the mixture for maximum flavor in every slice.

Layering for the Swirl: Pour half of the batter into the prepared loaf pan. Next, spread half of the cinnamon swirl mixture over this layer. Top it with the remaining batter, followed by dolloping the leftover cinnamon swirl mixture on top. Using a knife, gently swirl through the batter to create a marbled effect.

Bake: Place the loaf in the preheated oven and bake for 50-60 minutes. A toothpick inserted into the center should come out clean when the loaf is done.

Cool and Glaze: Allow the loaf to cool in the pan for 10 minutes before carefully transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely. If you wish to add a glaze, mix the powdered sugar, milk (or cream), and vanilla extract until smooth. Drizzle this glaze over the cooled loaf for a sweet finishing touch.

Serve and Enjoy: Slice the loaf and serve it warm or at room temperature for a delightful treat. Enjoy the heavenly flavors of apple and cinnamon in every bite!
