Ingredients

1 sheet of frozen puff pastry (thawed)

1 medium apple (such as Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), cored and thinly sliced

4 oz Brie cheese, sliced (rind removed)

2 tbsp brown sugar

1 tsp ground cinnamon

1 tbsp fresh lemon juice

1 egg (for egg wash)

1 tbsp water

Optional: ¼ cup chopped walnuts or pecans for added crunch

Optional: honey for drizzling

Instructions

Prep the Oven and Puff Pastry: Start by preheating your oven to 400°F (200°C). On a lightly floured surface, gently unfold the thawed puff pastry and roll it out with a rolling pin to form a rectangle, measuring approximately 12x9 inches.

Slice and Prepare the Apples: In a medium mixing bowl, combine the thinly sliced apples with the brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and fresh lemon juice. Toss the ingredients together until the apples are fully coated. Let the mixture sit for about 5 minutes to allow the apples to absorb the flavors.

Create the Puff Pastry Design: Position the pastry rectangle so that the longer side is facing you. Cut the pastry into three equal strips lengthwise, leaving a 3-inch wide central strip for the filling. On each side of the central strip, make diagonal cuts about 1-inch apart along the edges, creating a braid pattern.

Layer the Filling: In the center strip of the pastry, layer the Brie cheese followed by the spiced apple mixture. If you prefer some extra texture, sprinkle the chopped walnuts or pecans over the apples.

Braid the Pastry: Starting at the top, fold the upper edge of the pastry over the cheese and apples. Take one diagonal strip from the left side and fold it over the filling towards the center. Repeat with a diagonal strip from the right side. Continue alternating the strips from each side towards the bottom until the braid is complete, tucking in the ends to seal it securely.

Egg Wash: In a small bowl, whisk together the egg and water to create an egg wash. Use a pastry brush to generously apply the egg wash over the top of the braided pastry, which will give it a beautiful golden color when baked.

Bake to Perfection: Carefully transfer the braided pastry onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes or until the pastry is puffed and golden brown.

Serve and Enjoy: Once baked, remove the pastry from the oven and allow it to cool for a few minutes. Drizzle with honey if desired, then slice into portions to serve. Enjoy your warm and delicious Apple Brie Puff Pastry Braids!
